Default IH 982 Rear End Question

Hello,

I have a IH 982 project and I am in search of a cast iron rear end. I have one out of a IH 782 but it appears that the front brackets are slightly different. I know that some of the internal parts are different due to the height of the rear wheels but does anyone know if a CI rear end out of a 782 will fit a 982? Any feedback is appreciated.

They are different part #s. #1 on the list. I thought they were the same, there's my lesson for today.

I thought for sure they would be the same until I started comparing them. I wonder if the CI rear end for the 982 is truly unique to that model. May make it difficult to locate one. Thanks for the reply.

If you have a 782 rear end you can take the guts out of the 982 rear and install them in the 782 cast rear.

That was sort of my original idea. I was planned on taking the guts out of a 2072 rear end and put them in a CI 782 rear end. Unfortunately the front of the housing is slightly different on the 782.

If your talking about the difference being that the 782 has an internal brake with all associated parts, and the 982 has the dual brakes, so it is missing the brake parts on the housing....... then it's not that they are different. One just has an internal brake and the other doesn't.

I think the reason for the part number difference has to do with the holes in the upper part of the rear housing being machined for the bearing for the PTO. IIRC, the 782's holes were not tapped, and the boss wasn't machined. I'm almost certain they (the two rear ends) are the same otherwise.

The major difference between the Sundstrand Hydros in the 82 series GT and the 982 SGT tractors, is the output shaft. See image...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
