They are a good running engine from any experience I've had with them. I have used plate tampers with those engines on them. Always started well and ran without any hitches. Of course they were maintained religiously. As with any engine proper maintenance is the key to success.

I have 7 hp subaru on the dirtmaster backhoe. It don't have many hours on it but I can say it is a very good starting engine.
My only gripe is the way the dipsticks are angled. I find it hard to read. The image is of a 9 hp version but it is much the same layout.

I believe Subaru engines are the results of mergers between Wisconsin engines and others over the years.

I push a Billy Goat leaf blower around every autumn. It's equipped with 9hp Subaru/Robin engine. Easy to start. Runs good and smooth. I like it!

Thank you for the feedback everyone
 . I have an Outback now and a Forester before that, had no clue until now that they made small engines as well. Smart move for them to rebrand those engines under the Subaru name, the cars are selling as fast as they can make them(literally), especially the Outback. I guess I will try my luck on some Subaru small engines next
