I have a problem its not with my Cub Cadet but on my Allis Chalmers 410. It has a K241 in it and it is knocking under load and at low idle. The thing is though my great uncle owned it originally and had the motor overhauled and bored 0.20 over in the early 90's, and it was hardly used after that. Could it be the balance gears ? I pulled the head to replace the head gasket and the piston is tight in the bore. It doesn't appear to knock when I turn it over by hand or when I pulled the spark plug out turned it over with the key. Thanks for the help in advance.

Just going to throw this out as an idea. the knocking underload could be from bad gas, I once bought a tractor that did as you described but after I ran some fresh fuel through it it was fine. If its been sitting for a while it might be worth it to drain the tank and fill it with fresh gas.

could be a number of things. hard to just narrow it down without taking somewhat apart. pretty much anything that rotates can knock.
crank end play cam end play rod bearing piston fit flywheel nut tight taking the pan off would let you check the rod, cam and crank end play now AC used a right angle gear box that would wear out and cause some odd noise. you may want to check that out. |

Okay so I think I might have figured it out the drive shaft is slightly bent and is hitting the rock shaft
, Its a well built machine but the only thing I don't like is that its not a direct drive. Thanks for the help!

Okay, so I put the extra driveshaft in and it still had a knock so I checked the right angle box and tranny and they were fine. So I pulled the motor out ,inspected everything and took out the balance gears , the only problem I saw was that the rod had some play from left to right. I think at this point I'm just going to run it and see what happens , since I have a spare motor. Oh , and I did drain the old gas as well.

The rod does have a spec as to end play, don't recall what it's supposed to be. I took the balance gears out my k321 I have . All their good for is putting holes on blocks and ruining engines.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
