Default V/R S/G test

I'm using R.Bedell's test procedure on my 105 and have a question. When I ground the S/G to the battery I get a very slight drop in RPM's. Using a laser tachometer I measure it to be a drop of about 100 rpm's. The ampmeter meter pegs out on the positive side. Is this enough of a drop to say the V/R is defective? My other question is, the way I understand the test there are only two options. Rpm's drop or do not, leading to the conclusion the V/R or the S/G is bad. If both components are good what is supposed to happen? Thanks for the help.

If RPMs drop then it sounds like it's charging and generator is good. You need a volt meter to measure battery volts while doing this. Report back, should be over 14 volts or so, and also that much during normal operation, over 13 at least.

RPM's drop = S/G good
RPM's don't drop = S/G not good

You either have a bad V/R or bad wiring.

Thanks for your replies. Alvy, dumb question on my part, which contact points should I measure the voltage between? I'll check tomorrow and let you know.

No such thing as a dumb question Steve, you would measure voltage between positive and negative battery terminals.

O.K, this is what I measured. Engine off, battery voltage = 13.6. Engine running, battery voltage = 14.6. When I jump the S/G terminal "F" to the battery negative, rpm's drop and the battery voltage shoots up to 18. I only jumped it for a few seconds because the voltage appears to keep climbing. What does this mean? Thanks.

Steve it sounds like everything is working. 13.6 or so is good charging volts and yes the s/g full fielded will pump out those kind of numbers. What kind of problem are you having? No start? Weak start?

That's good that everything seems right. Some people might call me meticulous, or something else, I'm just going though this machine one part at time and when I see a thread on testing a component, I try it. This winter I'm planning on stripping most on the sheet metal off, sandblast and paint. Also a good pressure wash and replace the wiring harness with the one that came in this week. Rebuild the PTO, and the tiller unit are next. I'm not wanting a show machine, just something that looks good and is sound for the next generation. So far I've, changed engine oil, trans fluid and filter, replaced stuck hydro valves, new points, spark plug, total steering column rebuild, S/G brushes and bearings, new tires, carb rebuilt. Probably also a few things I've missed. Electrically, the only thing I see left are the coil and V/R. Does anyone have any thoughts on changing out these last two items while I'm doing all this? Thanks for the help.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
