Default Cub108 - Drive Clutch questions

Hello Cub Enthusiasts! The clutch on my 108 was last replace in 1990. The clutch is slipping now.

So, if I replace the friction disk, would you recommend replacing the throw out bearing and other clutch-related parts?

The clutch disk is about $46 and the throw out bearing is about $50 at CubParts.com. A little pricey but I don't want to put it all back together only to have to service it later.

I wouldn't do one unless I did. You should also have the clutch plates "turned" or machined, and check the driveshaft out. Sometimes they are wore, or even bent. Also, not uncommon for the teaser spring to be broke. You'll have $125-$150 at least in it doing it right.

It really does kinda suck (cost wise) but yeah, if you're going to replace anything, it really is best to do it all.

This is not an area where you want to "skimp" if you do it all, you should get many, many years out of a rebuilt clutch/drive shaft assy.

Agree, take it apart and inspect. Replace everything that is worn. Put back together and forget about it for about 25 years.

I like working on my Cub just as much as the next guy but not when it comes to rebuilding the clutch, do once, do it right. Use this time to upgrade the spring if needed also pay close attention to the driveshaft, Mine had to be replace because the holes were oblonged at the rear coupler.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
