Default M18 on Cub 1810

I have an 1810 with the Magnum 18hp Kohler. The engine has no compression. As I look in the head through the spark plug holes the piston is moving but the valves are not moving as I crank the engine.

I know this information is not going to tell anyone exactly what is wrong but before I take the engine off the tractor and tear it apart what is the likelihood its worth rebuilding?

seams odd the valves don't move. I've seen 1 valve stick. on the KT series I've seen the rod break and hit the cam and break the cam to. they are expensive to rebuild. you need 2 of everything.

Look into the oil fill hole and you will probably see the govenor gear is missing or not turning.

What would that have to do with the valves not moving?

Recently I purchased a M-18 with the same problem and after splitting the engine, this is what I found. Half of the cam teeth were missing.

I guessing that is what I am going to find too. This tractor and engine has 1851 hours on the meter and I believe it. It was my grandfathers (not his 1st cub but it was the last one he owned) and I mowed a lot of grass with it. He did too. It was a good tractor so much so that when it quit running (my mom was using it) she went out and bought a used 1811.

I was hoping this 1810 could be fixed reasonably but I am not for sure now. I took the motor out today and its sitting ready to be torn down. I am waiting though until my 13 year old son comes home so he can learn a bit about small engines. Once we open it up I post what I find.

So I got way behind... had to have knee surgery so its going to be awhile before I get this engine apart.

I did find a used Kohler Command ch620... does anyone know if it will replace the M18 fairly easily? I have not purchased it yet but its still available as of right now.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
