Default First start on my 108 project- questions

I was able to get the 108 to start today for the first time since I've owned it. I was told the previous previous owner was starting it with starting fluid all the time. I changed the head gasket, the cylinder and combustion chamber was clean. new plug, points, condenser, oil, gas, carb cleaning and battery.

It was difficult to get the engine to fire but when it did it would try to start for a very long time and finally build up and build up RPM to run on its own. Is this a sign of low compression? when it did fire off it ran good but there was alot of smoke coming from the breather and the exhaust, whiteish gray smoke, not blue. I don't believe the governor is working either because the engine went full throttle right away.

I have another older k241 i can put on here that I was told ran good.

What are your thoughts?


Also, it doesn't seam like the engine turns over very fast with the starter? Is that normal?

It not turning over fast could be from a weak battery or starter/generater, another option for slow starting could be a broken compression release. Have you tryed ajustiing the governor falloowing this instructions in the manual? I doubt its low on compression if its turning over slow.

The battery is brand new, I can believe the starter could be bad as this tractor spent along time outside. I am looking over the governer setting procedure now. I would like to think if it were working at all it would not have let it over speed like that, right?

Make sure all the carb linkage is free. If it's been sitting outside, then it may be "sticky".

Start at the beginning please. Don't jump from problem to problem. Start with getting it to crank correctly, then move to the running problems. No good trying to work on an engine that won't crank right.

So I charged the battery and it turns over nicely now, like i feel that it should.

I adjusted the governor and the valves per the manual. The governor linkage was loose from the shaft so that is why it went full throttle the first time it fired. Throttle linkange is free and smooth and I lubed the throttle cable while i was messing with it. There is spark at the plug and when I put my trouble light on the point it lights up just as the "S" comes into the window. No fire, it feels like it really wants to start.

Your light should go out when the S comes in the window--the points open (breaking the circuit) at time of spark. This should be about 20 degrees before TDC on the compression stroke. where are you putting the trouble light's two leads?

I think that's it. I have the light coming on when the S mark is in the window. I bet I'm on the exhaust stroke. I am putting the leads on points bracket and the screw where you attach the wires.

OK, keep rotating another 360 degrees to get to the compression stroke. Your contact points are fine.

Ok, I got finally got it running, it finally built up enough compression to fire off and it poured smoke from the breather, exhaust and dipstick. Too much crankcase pressure.

So I put the extra k241as on it. Fired right up and ran good. The extra engine has a .030" piston in it and some scoring on the cylinder walls but it runs. It will probably use some oil but it will keep me moving until I can get the original K241 rebuilt.

Back to the original engine. I pulled the head and at TDC eveything looks fine. At BDC you can see a large gap along the edge of the piston where it has eroded, maybe .100". Probably from the starting fluid. There were no markings on the piston except a large "A". I am assuming the engine has never been rebuilt.
