Default 682 shutdown

My cub cadet 682 was mowing fine the other day. I mowed for about an hour then it started sputtering and shut off. I started it up again. At idle it was fine. When you go to move, it started sputtering again and got even worse when you engage the PTO. Whats wrong? The carb was just cleaned. My guesses are either the points/condenser, coil or fuel pump. If you let it sit for an hour then fire it up again, its fine for awhile, but then starts sputtering again. Can anyone tell me for sure which if any whats wrong? BTW its a KT17 series 2 engine.

Thanks

Scott

Well, I'd say that list of guesses pretty much covers main things that fail.....

Um.... not without more info. Did you actually try to figure out what's wrong with it?

Does it lose spark when it starts sputtering?
If you pull the choke out, will it run?
Is there gas in the oil?
Is there fuel in the tank?
How old are the plugs?
When was it's last tune up?

Just because you just cleaned the carb out doesn't mean anything. It can still be a plugged carb. Did you flush the tank? New fuel lines? Filter?

Could be:
Plugged carb.
Bad fuel/water in the fuel.
Condenser
Plugs
Coil
Points
Sticking valve
Blown head gasket

Start trying to eliminate what isn't bad. Come back with more info.

Could be the gas cap vent clogged. As soon as it starts to cut out loose the cap. Its easy to try.

Ok. Well im not out of the woods. It started sputtering and almost shutting off again. This time i used the choke and it helped keep it going. After about 2min of acting up it returned to normal. Then started about 10min again later. So evidentally its a fuel problem. Carberator?

Good chance. TBH, I was kinda surprised when you said the points fixed it. That didn't really fit the entire symptom. BTW, did you replace the condenser?

Well, the condenser doesn't affect spark. It keeps the points from burning up. So, if it was bad and you didn't replace it, go get one, and another new set of points because they'll be bad now.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
