Default 1450 hydro lift problems

I found a 1450 a couple weeks ago for pretty cheap so I figured id grab it. It had no hood, grill frame, or alu. nose for the hood (my buddy actually had a spare hood so now its got one). It needs LOTS of TLC still. It smoked real bad when I got it so I re-seated the valves and just got it back together last night. The exhaust valve was in pretty bad shape so that kinda explains the smoking. Im gonna fire it up today and see if the smoking problems fixed. But to my question.. the hydro lift seems to be stuck. I got it to move about 1/4" and that's as far as it goes. The lines for the lift had rust holes in them and was spraying hytran everywhere. I temporarily fixed them with plumbers putty until I get new lines. Not sure if its getting enough fluid or if its simply locked up. Any help is appreciated.

That putty will not hold. There is alot of pressure there. Is the problem with the lift itself or the handle. Sometimes the valve will get stuck after sitting a long time causing the handle not to move. The 1250 I had did this. All I did to fix it was spray down the top of the valve with so PB blaster and let it set a few days. Then I took a long punch and a small hammer and lightly tapped on the end of the spool.

Great advice Mr. Goffena. I had the same thing on a 129 that I installed a hydraulic lift on and likewise, I used some PB Blaster to free it up. If there was rust holes in the lines, then there is water in the lines as well. Those lines are going to need replaces, filter and fluid change, as well. By changing the spark plug, cleaning up the points, change the air cleaner, running some ethanol free gasoline with Marvel Mystery Oil in it and changing the oil to pure synthetic will help with the smoking engine, if it isn't anything more mechanically wrong (ie. bad rings, piston bore, etc.).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
