So I have my Grandfathers 129. It's engine is in hard shape, it was overheated, the head is toast and a mouse did a nice job messing up the tin that wasn't destroyed by the heat.
The rest of the tractor isn't bad, it's sad to see it sit there engine less. I know I could rebuild this motor again (it's been rebuilt once already) but it means finding a new head, new tin and what ever else I run into. I fellow not to far away has a Kohler K301AS out of a Wheel Horse C-125 that suppose to be in decent shape. How big a job is it to make this unit fit in the 129? The obvious difference is the WH engine uses a stator/starter setup vs the starter generator that's on the 129. I know the Quite Lines used these motors so I'm guessing it's possible. Would I be better off waiting for an older used engine or going for this one? K |

My 129 still has the original motor in it, but sometime before I got it it has some donor parts from something like a Gravely (I really don't know where the donor parts came from) and was converted to stator charging system and conventional starter. I guess I'm not purist enough, but I think this is the better arrangement. What I would be concerned about more than that is the starting/charging is that there are several different crankshafts used in those engines. I believe they might be all 1" diameter, but different applications use different length shafts. There are also two different blocks, a wide block and a narrow block. I believe WH and CC both use the narrow block. Should work.

Oil pan is different, and I believe the crankshaft is incorrect. Almost 100% sure the crank is wrong. Better wait for a Cub Cadet motor.

I thought of the oil pan also. I'm concerned about the differences pertaining to the "Long Block". External things can be swapped easily. I think the WH motor uses a short oil dipper on the connecting rod, which can be used on a deep pan no problem. The crankshaft is the big kicker. Verify that before diving in too far.

I had thought about the crank. The CC K301 is a different part number then the WH. Close but no cigar.
That OK, I would rather have something closer to original just to keep life simpler. K |
