This subject (Tachometers) comes up often.
There has been some research done on this with no much results. So, if someone knows where and what to use, it sure would be nice. Dash Mount: * Analog Type * 2-1/16" Diameter [52 mm] * 0-4000 RPM Range * Suitable for Single & Twin Cylinder engines * Four Stroke Engines Shop Tach * Suitable for Single & Twin Cylinder engines * Four Stroke Engines Digital Tach's are welcome also, but the primary concern is the Analog type.

I too would like more information on a tach.
I have a 30 year old Snap On digital timing light that I have used to time and set the engine rpm's on my Cubs, but the digital readout has become so dim over the years that you can't read it anymore. So I'm on the lookout for something to take its place.

As far as gauges..... This VDO gauge will work. It is the correct size, and it can be set from 1 cyl to 12 cyl. It will work either off the coil, or can be set to read off an alternator. Here is the link to the setting instructions. To set it to pick up off the coil/pts is easy, to set it off the alternator, it's a little more difficult. Also, an inductive pick up can be used to read off the ring gear of the flywheel for the diesel guys. I knew VDO made a gauge but hadn't taken the time to do any research till now.
As far as a shop tach, there are several. Depends on how much you want to spend. Some timing lights have a tach feature built into them as Y-Sam mentioned. I have a multi-meter with an inductive clamp that will read RPM's. There are also photo-tachs, touch tachs, (my photo-tach will do both "visual" and touch). I realize most of my tools are Snap-On and not really affordable for the do-it-yourselfer that will only use it once or twice a year. I recommend renting a timing light from a parts store that has a tach function, or searching the net for cheap versions like I mentioned. There is lots more info on the VDO gauges that I mentioned. I believe VDO is available at O'Reilly's, but e-bay seems to be the best source. |

Jonathon:
According to the installation instructions, it will only work with 4, 6, or 8 Cylinder engines.

Ok. So, I goofed. The gauge that can be programmed to run off 1 or more cylinders at the coil is a 85mm (3 3/8") gauge. However, the one I linked to can be run off of a tach or "W" terminal of the alternator. It can be set by hertz. So it would work on the quietline and above. However, the process to calibrate it is somewhat involved and may be a bit much for someone with average mechanical/electrical knowledge. Otherwise it looks like, at least with VDO, the 3 3/8" tach will work on the older motors.
I'll do some more digging and see if I can find a 2 1/16" tach that will run off the ign coil. Sorry about that.

As far as shop tach i use an old dwell meter. ik=4k I have 2 tiny tachs and a knockof(no good). The one on the 1050 singles is good. I bought one from tiny for use on a twin but did not work on a single. I talked to them at that time and he said maybe. At that time they were reworking one for the singles. Best to talk with them. Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
