Default Value of a 682

This may not be the place to post this, so please forgive me if I am wrong,
here.

I would like to get another tractor to compliment my 1250. There is a 682 for sale near me. According to the ad, it runs and mows well. The picture shows that it missing the grill and headlight assembly, and it needs some red touch-up in the headlight housing area. The machine probably needs paint through-out. It looks as if the fender pan has been off at one time. I don't see any major body damage other the the missing headlights and grill.

The asking price is $750. I think that is rather high for this machine. I haven't looked at it to see what engine it has; series I, series II or other.

I would like to know thoughts on a 682 and a 682 deal. What are its strengths and pitfalls? What will probably have to be repaired or replaced?

In advance, thank you.

From your description 750 is high. Grille and headlights will run you another 100, give or take a few.

I don't know how to get the pictures out of this ad, but here is the Craig's List listing. I am thinking of going to look at this thing on Saturday.

http://brainerd.craigslist.org/grd/4377467844.html

Does anyone have any comments on a 682 in general? What are some of the Strengths, weaknesses and quirks of this machine? What should I look for?

Thank you.

If it were me, I'd go, look at it, make sure it runs good, and depending on engine/hours, I'd probably offer $500 and see what the guy says. Looks in decent shape, but that grill and headlight panel are going to cost a few to replace.

If he sticks hard to his price, just make sure he knows the cost to replace the headlight panel, grill, foot pads, grill ornament, and anything else you spot missing.

depending on what you are planning on using it for you might want to look for a tractor with hydraulic lift. they are allot nicer with a tiller or blower and in a used market not that much difference in cost. 782, 14 or 1650

For what it's worth, my opinion is the price is a tad high, but that is your choice on if you want it bad, or could live without it.
Check the rear fluid level and see if the filter looks to be an older one or newer type. Not to say it was abused, but just to get an idea if it was recently changed or not.
Crawl under and see if the cooling fan is intact. If it's gone there is a good chance the pump didn't get much for cooling, and the owner wasn't real good at checking things either.
Make sure the engine tins are there on the tractor. Check the air filter, another easy thing to maintain, but also if it's plugged up would be a good indication of neglect by the owner.

I'd also check the engine oil, and make sure it doesn't have gas in it. If there's gas present, it could need a new fuel pump or a carb rebuild, possibly both. When I got my 1872, it needed a carb rebuild a new fuel pump.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
