Howdy,
I am new here and new to Cub Cadet too. I have purchased a VERY nice 1977 Cub Cadet 1000. The tractor is in great shape and purrs like a kitten. Are there any areas of these tractors I need to be concerned about, or to look for. I am a previous (green brand) tractor owner. Thanks!! |

Welcome to OCC! Glad to have another wide frame gear drive fan onboard!
I'm working on restoring one now. Thread is titled "deal on a 1000" on this forum. It was not running and had multiple issues when I found it. Engine is currently at the machine shop getting bored for a rebuild. Some of the issues I ran into and resolved might be of interest. Even if it is running well, you should check the iso mounts (rubber mounts under the engine support rails), the drive shaft flex joint, both subject to wear and eventual failure. Otherwise, they are rugged machines, and any other issues would be apparent in operation (loose steering, worn clutch, etc).

As others said check the rubble I so mounts. I think general rule of thump is if u can grab the engine and move it its time to replace. Rubber rag joint at rear of transmission check to see if its ripped or wore out.

Thanks for the replies!! I will post some pics once we get moved in. The tractor belonged to the previous owner of the house, so I asked if the tractor was for sale, and he said yes...... so there you go. My first Cub Cadet. It appears very similar to the John Deere 216 I used to have. I am sure I will get it sorted out, but from what I can see and hear, it purrs like a kitten!!

I have a fully restored one with some funky hubcaps on it (see my profile-My Cub pics), but I don't know how it rides because I have never been on it. They appear to be good solid cubs and I think that you will be very pleased with it after having crossed the line from green to yellow. Sounds like sawdustdad and others have given you some great advice on what to watch for. Congratulations on your first cub purchase. Looking forward to your pics.

Almost forgot. It would be a good idea to check the engine mount bolts as well.

I have a 1000 that was also made in Aug 1977. What is your serial #?
ISO are a must, do the cradle mod. Be careful opening the hood. Some are forced too far which can break the nose casting. Look over your clutch and replace any worn parts. Rebuilding a clutch can get expensive and will only get worse of you let it go. Post pictures when you can. I'll do the same along with my serial #. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
