I would like to rebuild my qa42a gearbox but can't find any specs or anything like a diagram that shows tolerances the bearings are out on mine and needs to be done for next winter. Any links would be helpful.

That's because there are none, at least that I know of. The outer bearings slip in the bore and are secured by snap rings. Get yourself to the parts lookup and it is pretty obvious how it goes together.
Quality bearings are quite pricey. I did mine last fall before snow flew and used parts from IH. The bill for everything from IH was $147 w/tax. You can save quite a bit if you get them from McMaster Carr though. If you need new shafts though, get the checkbook out and be sitting down, that is if you can find them. I wound up cutting a new keyway 180* from the original in order to salvage mine |

finsruskw is right, no specs but simple to rebuild. Bearings can be bought at a bearing supply company (I.E. Coldwell or Bearings Inc) for way below what IH wants. Don't worry about the shaft. Any machine shop can cut a keyway. JeffinPA here on the site is a machinist and I'm sure if you contacted him he would be more than willing and for a extremely fair price. If you need gears, you can either look for used, or drop me a PM, I think I found a replacement set. Haven't purchased them and tried yet, as winter is over here and the rush is off.

The gearbox shafts are the same both snow throwers and tillers so I might as well get some material.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
