After removing the tins from the M18 we pulled from the 1811 I found a nice bulge and crack in the block. Looks like the rod broke then took out the cam and one jug. The other crank throw knocked the cam into the block.
I have a spare block with one good jug and a crank that needs to be turned. My question is this, is there a difference between the jug other than one is tapped for the coil mount? The two good jugs I have are both from the coil side of the engine. I have inspected the jugs from both engines and can not find a difference other that the treads for the coil mount. The plan is to turn the crank for oversized rods then re-ring to old pistons and install everything in my spare block.I have kept the pistons with the jugs they came out of so there would not be a problem with wear patterns but it should not matter with a fresh hone and new rings. Building these M18's is pricey! I can build a big block Chevy cheaper than what new parts cost for this Kohler ![]()

may want to make sure when you put it on the opposite side the intake and exhaust are in the correct location and the lifters line up.

According to the parts book, the jugs have the same reference number. Don was on the right track. I have several jugs laying around, and they look the same to me, and the book confirms. BUT, what was the intake will now be the exhaust, and visa-versa. SOOOO.... you need to make sure that you switch the valves. They ARE different. Also, clean the ports REALLY good.... Doing what your about to do isn't something I'd recommend. But, it's your $$.

I have done what you are intending to do. It should work well I have done it to KT17 s and to M18s
A jug from a kt17 will fit on a M18. I have cleaned up the old crankshafts with emery cloth and used them with no problems. I have 14 782s and 2 1811s 1 782D. One of my 1811s had a hole in the block and bad jug. I fixed the engine last fall just like I stated and used the tractor all winter as my snowblower tractor. Here in Minnesota we just had one of the worst winters ever and my 1811 got a good work out. I also do four other neighbors driveways. Brian ![]() |
