Would a cast iron transaxle out a 1282 be a good swap candidate for my broken Aluminum one that currently resides in my 1572 project?

Cast iron ones will fit. But the 1282 has a different final drive ratio. You would have to gut both units and swap parts.

I'm thinking the cast rear requires a little modification to fit on a diesel.

What makes you think that? The tractors, frames and the trans are the same gas or diesel. Just different ratio's between super and non super. I think there are some issues with the fuel tank, but that isn't modifying the trans in any way. May have to raise the tank some. Seems like there are clearance issues, but they can be got around.

I have the typical broken Al rear where the bolts worked themselves loose and the PO didn't take the time to check them. So I bought a good used center section and gutted it and then this whole unit came up for auction on eBay but I don't know enough about them to just buy it. How did the IH diesels get around the clearance issue?

IH never built a diesel. The first model was the 782D and the 882 and they were both CCC built tractors. The CI will work but you need to change all the guts from the aluminum to the CI. Like the others have said, the tank will have some clearence issues. I think you will need to move one of the fuel lines from the bottom to the top of the tank. I have a 2 that I need to change over to CI because they are broken also.

i have done the cast iron swap in my 1772. best move i made. just have to swap all the gears over from the aluminum to the iron. and the tank issue was much simpler then most people think. the issue is the return fuel line is on the bottom of the tank and that's what hits the rear. all i did was plug the hole in the tank and relocated the return to the side. tank fits perfect. i have much more confidence in the iron when i hook up my 600lb backhoe and go to work with it.
1st pic is the issue, 2nd is my fix, 3rd is it installed with no other modifications.

I misspoke. I meant how did they get around this issue on the 782 with cast iron rears. Thanks for the pictures. I will keep u posted on progress
