Tried a search but it seems 'pto' is too short a word for the search to work. Which is a shame because I've also tried to search by model number but can't do that either unless it's four or more digits.
Anyway, to my question. I have a 129 that is strictly for pushing snow. Would it hurt to take off the PTO? Does it serve as a balancer? If it can be removed is there anything that needs to be done once it's removed?

Pullers remove them all the time. You'll just need to keep the pulley on there for starting it.

No, as already stated, they can be removed.
But, it doesn't hurt to leave it on either.......... |

The pto only does what a pto does, it has no hidden agenda.
Not at all sure why you want to remove it, unless it is damaged in some way and causing problems. If the pto is removed chances are that other parts will soon follow (rod and turnbuckle) then the arm on the rock shaft will bounce around and constantly be hitting the basket on the starter pulley and it will get removed. Somewhere along the line someone will want to sell or restore this machine and it will not be complete, very much decreasing its value. If I thought that there was the slightest possibility that my son or grandson would want to restore one of Grandpas old Cub Cadets, I would do everything in my power to keep it all intact. I also want my Daughter to be able to get every penny she can out of my belongings when I'm gone, so I try to keep as much stuff together as I can. It's your tractor, do with it what you want.

ya I would leave it on. I bought a pulling tractor because it looked cool but quickly found it cost a lot of money to replace all those now missing parts. I wish I had them because I have 1 tractor that only pulls a trailer. Push snow now and can add a blower later.

I was thinking if it wasn't necessary then I could use the pto on another Cub that has a bad pto. I've got 15 more Cub Cadets so I'm not too worried about ever needing the pto on the 782 down the road. I've got a dedicated CC for each attachment that I have and then some. There's nobody in the family interested in my collection and I have no kids to worry about. When I'm gone they will just go to auction anyway. Not too worried about resale value as I'll never sell them. But....if it's going to cause a bunch of rattle action I'll leave it alone and get another pto. Many thanks to all. Question answered.

If it still works with it on then why bother taking the time to take it off? My vote is to leave it.

I wouldn't do this for just anybody BUT,,,,,,,Let me be the first to step right up and volunteer to become the heir apparent of your Cub armada and I will ask for nothing else. You can EVEN include the ones with no PTO's, just let me know where to send my personal information.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
