Default Cub Cadet 582 Engine

Need guidance please.

I have a cub cadet 582 IH garden tractor. Original briggs 16 is getting tired and weak.

Looking for replacement engines found the briggs vanguard 18 from small engine warehouse.

http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/...l#prettyPhotot

It indicates that the engine is a replacement for the 682 and 782, which I know is Hydro, where as mine is a gear drive.

Question, will it fit without a lot of modifications. Any better/easier choices?

My guess is that you may need a different driver setup to bolt to the engine. I don't think that would be a big deal. Maybe something from a narrow frame or a QL.

Thank you. It looks like this may be the best course of action then.

I am almost 100% certain that the clutch driving plate will bolt right on. I looked at several different tractor parts breakdowns and some of my stuff here, and I don't think they changed the patterns. If they did, it would be odd, even the 1806 CC shows the same clutch driver as a 582, and one had a briggs motor and the other a kohler. I'm pretty sure you won't have to change anything.

J-Mech is correct same drive plate. You asked for better choices I would suggest check around local and craigslist to find a used low how engine You could probably find a complete cub with a magnum engine or vanguard etc etc that may have problems not related to engine much cheaper than what you posted.... Just keep in mind specs of engine/ shaft length and diameter etc

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
