I have came across a cub 682 that is in need of another motor. Can I please get some insight on what other members here have put in their 82's.

Particularly I am hoping to find something that will bolt directly in and not another KT.. IDK why, but this is the 2nd 682 I've owned now and I can say I'm not ecstatic about the KT series.

General knowledge is what I'm looking for and the reasoning behind your particular set up.

I'd love to toss a 2 cyl. diesel in it, but I honestly don't have any idea why other than I have never owned a diesel GT yet.

So, what do you all have in your non KT 82's? What is the reasoning you chose that over something else? How was the install? On a scale of 1 to 5 I would say I am a 1.5 for motor knowledge... Yeah I need some help!!

I have a mag18 in my 782 and really like the power. It was in there when I got my 782, 2 years ago and only had about 40 hours on it from new and I have never had the first problem with it. I think lots of 82 series owners will have their own personal preferences....so this is just mine, but I have never owned an onan or diesel, so I am not qualified to speak about those. Your question is probably best answered by someone who has ran all of the different engines in their 82's.

The Kohler M-18 will be a drop in fit as stated. There will be some minor electrical modifications.

If it was my tractor I'd be looking for any of the following Cubs for an organ donor. 2160, 2164, 2165 or a 2185. You get most of what you need to swap short of a muffler and a pump adapter. Pics are my old 1210 with the engine from a 2160 and a 1440 muffler.

I've got four 82 series tractors and three have the series II KT and the one has the series I. A series II KT is really not that bad of a motor IMO (I won't say they are the best motor either), but if you happen to find one with an external oil filter, or make a setup on one, you will really improve the longevity of the engine. Both of my 782's and one 682 have the series II, haven't had any problems with either. Good power and no weird noises. The other 682 I just bought has the series I and it is starting to show its hours (over 2000). It has some piston slap to it and smokes at start-up but runs alright.

If it were me, (and might be in a year or so with my series I 682!) I have a spare series II engine for mine, but I would also look into a Mag 18 or some other conversion, especially one with pressurized oil.

I just put a command 18 in my 782. It came out of a 2185 cub cadet. I cut the 2185 drive shaft, slid it over the 782 drive shaft and pinned it. Had to buy a muffler from an 1864 to put on it. I haven't built any tin work around the muffler and I haven't got to mow or do much of anything with it yet, but I feel like it is going to work good.
