At the Cross Road
Ok our 70 project is at the point where I need to make a decision.Ive rebuilt the Pto ...complete drive line from bronze bushing to making a new drive line cupler and everthing in between new. New seals on the input shaft of the tranny.New pucks in for the rear brakes.....Completely flushed the gunk out of the rear end with new gaskets...Engine is on the bench lookin at me...lol...I took the carb and rebuilt it....probably never run again...lol...So while I had it off i decided to clean the crank case breather..When I got it off I noticed quite a bit of carbon build up on the exhaust valve spring side to the point that the top one half of the spring was one black blob...Kohlers are fairly new to me is this common? And this part of the rebuild is not my strong point.I planning on pulling the head a decarboning that end of things as well.That may very well answer my question on if I should go ahead and overhaul this thing or not.I havent had much run time since I got it.....It did smoke but cleared up after it ran a bit...no abnormal noises and seemed to have good power.With that Im gona let you guys chime in on this...OH one more thing...what is the material suppose to be for the breather itself...Never seen one other than this one...and mine was made out of steel wool.....Im guessing thats not correct..Im thinking the po has been in here as well....lol.....All suggestion welcome Thanks Randy

Well, from the sounds of things, looks like I would take a close examination of the Valves and Valve Guides. If these are sloppy, then you will have the conditions cited. BTDT
