anyone put a wheel horse kohler 10 hp in a cub cadet 104? I am wondering about
several possible problems such as actual bolt in to frame,front PTO fit, flywheel to driveshaft hook up among other things. on review of these points I have probably answered my own question. engine is pictured. also has the bendix starter.in any event would like members thoughts regarding this. |

I think it will be problematic. Oil pan is different, no drive cup on the front, and possibly a different PTO shaft. I think it would be easier to find a CC engine. I see them on craigslist all the time.

Is the Wheel Horse motor in good running order? Should be no problem at all to sell that on CL and as the other guys say, CC versions can be had by the same way. You might even offer up a trade on CL.

Hard to tell from the pics but that looks like a big flywheel engine, so it won't fit between the frame rails, I don't think the oil pan will fit between them either. If it should fit between the rails the bolt pattern on the pan won't line up with the holes in the frame.
Crank is different and there will be no way to power the pto. Then there is the whole thing about trying to get the wiring right so it will keep the battery charged. You appear to be in New York, make the WH engine start and run setting right there on the floor, shoot a short video of it running put it on ebay, I would think that the Wheel Horse enthusiasts will go crazy over it. Let them bid it up, if it runs good and doesn't smoke, it should fetch a pretty good price. Then use the funds to help finance a proper rebuild for the original Kohler from your 104. You will end up being much happier with it and it will last another 40 years.

I was going to do the same thing for my 169 roller, with a kohler 16hp from a wheel horse and other members wisely advised me against it, the same as they have already done for you. Good advice, take it and find yourself a cub cadet kohler 10hp. Maybe a trade could be arranged!
