What a great movie clip. Running a straight 30w oil does not hack it in cold, cold weather. Being thicker than molasses, it takes a long time to warm up & to properly coat the internal parts of the engine. Which means that the running engine is running dry. That means wear & tear.
That's why I use synthetic 10/30 sae30 small engine oil for instant lubrication. Eg: I ran out of gas &. My # 127 sat at the end of the drive this past monday, it was -12deg. below zero. Went into town got gas & did some shopping. By the time I got back it was about 2.5hrs. Later, filled it up & the engine cranked as if it was 40deg. Out. Didn't falter at all & felt good knowing the oil was instantly lubricating the internal parts of the engine on the 1st. Crank. ![]() ![]() NIK,

Nik the 12hp Kohler is not a pressure lube system so it still takes a little time for oil to get splashed up on the rod. That is why I run 5w-30w synthetic in the winter for just that reason.

Well, that officially scared the crap out of me! I am running straight 30 and it gets pretty cold here in NE PA. I'm going to switch to something lighter today. Maybe a 5w-30? I also have a question though. What's the harm in running the lighter oil year round instead of just in winter? People run the mix weight oil in cars, trucks, ect. Thanks,Mark

I run 30 wt in the summer and 10W-30 in the winter, both conventional grade. It seems to work; starts well when it's cold.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
