Default 149 Hydro Fan and Lights

I have a couple of questions as I tear my 149 down. First, there is no hydro fan on the drive shaft and there are no grooves for snap rings. Do I need to add a fan and how can I keep it in place? Second, the Electric Lift line (from the wiring diagram, Ign post of switch) was connected to the Light Switch. On the diagram the Light Switch line goes to something next to the "-" side of the Amp Gauge. Where do you suggest I attach the Light Switch to draw power?
Thanks, Gene

The snap ring is supposed to go around the "hub" of the fan shaft. One you slide the fan on ( it will be very tight to get on) you put the snap ring on around the fan. I recommend getting a wiring diagram and wireing your lights to the original specs.

I guess I should read closer... Yes you do need a fan and as for your wiring question that is out of my realm I am a fool when it comes to electrical systems.

I am in the middle of a 149 restore. It looks like the snap ring on the fan acts as a clamp holding it in place. I don't believe the 149 had an electric lift, mine is hydraulic cyl. 127 and 147 had electric lift.

I believe the power wire for the lights goes to the neg terminal on the amp gauge.

I'm not 100% sure they ever put an electric lift on a 149.

You can wire the lights to either the Batt. terminal of the key switch or the IGN terminal if you want the lights through the key (lights on only when the key is on.) Remember to use a fuse inline.

Look closely, If the fan was all busted up and gone, good chance the snap ring is still there on the drive shaft. It's a pretty hefty snap ring. If not, once you get a fan ya can probably pick up a snap ring for it. It has to go a specified distance from the rear coupler to avoid interference with the lift arm mechanism. I'm thinking 1-1/2" ahead of it but you probably should consult your manual to be sure.

The 149 did not originally come with an electric lift.

Thanks everyone for the information. There was no fan or snap ring on the drive shaft so I'll order one today. The reason I mentioned the Electric Lift is because the wiring diagram I have shows Electric Lift connector attached at the Ign Post of the switch and that lead was attached to the Light Switch. The lights are not attached to anything on my 149 now, so I didn't know if it would work or not. All my wiring is painted yellow and you can't see the color of the wires. I've made a new wiring harness with wire colors as close to the diagram as I can get. One more question, what are the three different positions on the Light Switch for? Both front and back lights connect on the same post and would seem to be on at the same time.
Thanks again. Gene

I believe power for the lights should come off the + terminal on the ammeter, to a fuse, then to a switch, and then the lights. That way the lights will work regardless of the ignition switch position, as I think they should.

this may help...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
