Default 450 snowblower rebuild

I am in the process of rebuilding this blower and get it mounted to my 1450. Before I blast this thing clean and paint it I need to modify the mounting bracket and I am also reworking the lift arms so it will pick up higher. I had to add a tab to the mounting brackets because the hole in the brackets that is used to bolt the mount to the newer style tractors is right inline with the rubber snubber on the QL models engine craddle. Don't worry, these brackets are just tacked inplace and after I'm done welding them and rounding the corners they should almost look like they belong.

This is how the blower looks mounted to the tractor. I didn't get a picture of it, but I did install the lift rod and the blower goes up and down fine.

This is my main concern at the moment. Has anybody ever repaired the splines on the fan? What is the best fix for this? The splines on the gear box shaft look fine, but the fan splines are almost gone and the fit on the shaft is very loose. Maybe this is normal, but it seems very worn to me.

The center of the impeller needs replaced. Yes, the splines are shot and are not supposed to be that way. A new impeller is still available, but pricey. $172.61 on a general search. You might be able to have the center cut out and a new splined hub welded in. I don't know off hand the dimensions of the spline and shaft. Here is a link to a precision splined hub, so if you can get the dimensions you may be able to find the correct one.......... PRECISION SPLINED HUB

NOTE: If you go this route the impeller should be balanced!! It spins very fast! Also, cost may be MORE to have the center cut out and repaired, than just purchasing a new impeller.

Thanks for the link. I am going to look into this more and see if I can find the correct hub. I do work at a machine shop so I'm sure I can come up with something.

I think I have a solution to my problem that will fix both the shaft and the fan and all it will cost me is a good quality 6 pt impact socket. My plan is to remove the shaft from the gearbox and machine a hex on it so the socket will fit tight on the shaft. Then I will bore the hub on the fan and machine the socket for a light press fit in the bore. After that a few tacks with the Tig welder and it should be good to go.

That actually sounds like a pretty good plan! Being that you are a machinist makes it affordable. If you had to pay for it, it would probably be just as cheap to buy a new impeller. GREAT IDEA! Make sure to post pics!

I got the lift on my blower finished. The blower picks up about 7". I remade the tabs for the liftrod to move the rod closer to the tractor and make everything double shear. Now I got to clean everything up and it should be ready for paint.

I finally got all the small brackets blasted clean and painted. I have to strip to actual blower housing by hand because it won't fit in our blast cabinet. I also bought a parts snowblower and a Sims cab yesterday. I dont have any pics of the cab yet, but it is in nice shape. Next week I need to start working on getting the splines fixed on the 2nd stage fan.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
