I bought an 86 a few months ago and engine runs a little rough. It's the original 8hp. I think I can put up to a 16hp in it but I'm not sure. I don't know if I should try to rebuild the original engine or buy a used one to put it. Can anyone tell me what engines will actually be a direct bolt on replacement for this model or if there are other engine options I might have with minimal modifications needed?
Thanks! |

WDEagle: The Model 86 was a fairly low production (only 8,489) model to begin with and by now, +/- 36 years later, not many remain. Just my $.02, but I suggest that it's worth far more as a Model 86 than jigger-rooging it into something it isn't. Besides, that little ole 8hp Kohler IH Cub Cadet will out work any modern bigger hp tractor by far!! Please do not under rate it...My Model 86 is Ser # 2050042U494955. Made in late Dec 1973. What Ser # is on yours?
The Briggs & Stratton Single Cylinder "L" Head Repair Manual will guide you into getting that K-181 into good runnng order...Please get one... and not to mention there's lots of help right here on the OCC Forum..just ask.. Myron B |

Hi WDEagle...Louisville Production figures, provided by Paul Bell, show your Cub Cadet Model 86 was made in early December 1972.

I think I have to say that I agree with Myron about this, your 86 is a lot more valuable as an original 86 than something that has been cobbled together. I also understand your desire for more power, but the old Kohler "K" series engines are a darn sight more powerful than the engines they have today, I would guess a Kohler 8 hp to be equil to or better than a modern 12 hp.
Are you sure the motor needs to be rebuilt or do you think it could just stand the carb rebuilt, plug, points, condenser and have the timing adjusted? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
