Default Cub Cadet 1042 Info/Cracked Block Solution?

Well, long story short we finally got moved into our new house which is why I've been a ghost on here the last couple weeks or so. I plan on putting up plenty of pics of the move and the Cub's new home as soon as our internet gets installed Anywho, this house must have been meant to be because it came with an unexpected free Cub Cadet!

It's nothing special, a 2006-2008 LT 1042. The PO told me it's got a hairline crack in the block and vibrates a bolt loose but that's all he knew. He said as soon as he discovered it, he parked it and quit using it which I believe, it looks like it's been sitting out back for a while. He also said that due to the crack, it had a bolt that kept backing itself out Well, being the top priority on my list, while waiting for a ride back to the old house for another load of stuff during move days, I went out, checked the oil, and turned the key. She fired right up, much to my surprise. The meter only shows 166 hours so it's still a young buck.

I listened to the motor and looked around for any visible damage but I didn't see any. Sounded rough, but could be from sitting for so long. I hopped on, drove it around front to the garage and parked it. I haven't touched it since, but I want to check it out better this weekend.

So I guess what I'm wanting to know is are there any other CC 1042 owners out there? Are these decent machines? I'm pretty sure they're considered "throw away" How about the motor, it's my first Kohler Courage motor and I've heard mixed reviews about them. Honestly I'd like to get it going and use it as a grass cutter only since it's got such a damn tight turning radius!

And if I do find a hairline crack, what's the best (i.e. cheapest) fix for this? I got it for free, so I'm considering JB Welding it and mowing with it till it blows then parting it out. I hate that mentality but with 3 other Cub's sitting in the garage, I don't REALLY NEED a 4th and I wouldn't be alright with selling a potentially ticking time-bomb to someone on Craigslist.

I'll be sure to post back when I get into it later and find out what is (or isn't) wrong with it.

Looks like Kohler knows they have a problem with these engines. You may be able to get some help. Good luck.

Thanks for the link! I saw the same thing, I'm hoping there will be help from Kohler but am kinda worried as I'm not the original owner of the machine :-/

Any chance you could get the PO to put in the claim?

Well, the PO isn't the OO

The PO got it from his father in law (at least that's what I remember him saying) so I highly doubt that's a real option

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
