Good morning all. Had a question for you all. My Cub has been leaking what looks like hydro fluid from the rear. I noticed it the other day when moving the tractor. I can not pin point this leak, and from a little research it looks like it could be my cork seal leaking? The face of the differential has oil on it, but can't follow the exact spot. With this leaking being present. This leak is not a very big leak. But after about a week of sitting, I have a small puddle on the floor. Also, I noticed yesterday when driving the lawn mower, that when I had the gear lever in the forward position, and slowly began to slide it back to go in reverse. The tractor would start going in reverse while the lever was still half way up in the forward position. Anyone have insite, or this problem before? Any help would be great.

You have common worn out hydrostatic tractor issues. The leak is most likely coming from the cork seal. It could also be coming from the suction line not being tight enough (unlikely) or the filter not being screwed on enough (also unlikely.) The slowdown issues you are describing is due to the linkage friction not being tight enough. I'm not entirely sure on your model where it is and how to tighten it.

Clean everything up good w/parts cleaner or power washer and let dry.
Then dust baby powder over everything there. Use an ear syringe to squirt the stuff everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. wait a day, and the oil in the powder will lead you right to the leak. May be something simple. Good luck! |

If you are going far enough to change the cork gasket, I'd get a set of damper springs and pins for the hydro. You may have to do a "trunion repair" also. Check your driveline while you are at it--may need new rubber discs/couplers. There is a lot of work just to change the gasket, you can do all the other while you have it apart with not much more work.

Traveller says it meets specifications for IH and Case, so it would probably work just fine also, but I have no experience with it personally. |

So just got everything removed. Removed the whole rear. After draining my differential, removed the cover plate and noticed this laying near the (I AM ASSUMING) the suction line for the fluid. Looks like the old cork seal
![]() Than after pulling the pump assembly off, I think I found the cause. The crack in the cork seal possibly? Would this be my small leak? ![]() The other thing is, could the old gasket I found on the bottom side of the axle pumpkin, covering the line, be the problem of me drifting backwards while in forward control still? And I guess this gasket had been replaced before, because the whole gasket is still on, and part of the old one was off in the pumpkin. |

Crappy looking gasket. Most likely the cause of the leak. Scrape it off good and clean up the surfaces (both pump AND rear end.) I used a razor blade and some acetone. Then remember to torque the pump back on. I think it's 30 LBS-- make sure you check the manual since I don't remember.
Universal tractor fluid from TSC works, but I don't endorse it, and the manufacturer didn't recommend it. My cub cadet runs genuine Hy-Tran from a Case IH dealer. the wandering of the tractor isn't from the gasket or lack there of. It's due to a host of things; IE trunnion repair, neutral adjust, worn linkages, etc.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
