I have pulled the engine out of my 147 to remove the balance gears. It ran fine prior to doing this but you could hear the balance gears clicking against the crank. While I had it apart I put a new piston and rod in it. Got it all put back together and it wants to race with just a little throttle. I have set the governor as per the kohler manual. Loosen the gov arm, move it to the full throttle position while hooked to the carb, turn the cross shaft ciunterclockwise and tighten. The gov spring and fadt idle stop are set just like my other caders as far as holes used and stop position. After a short trip around the yard I brought it back in and went through the adjustment procedure again. Upon start up, I cycled it a couple times and it seemed to be much better, but then it took off again. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the flyweights are "hanging up". Check the rod from the governor control rod to the carburetor first. With the motor off you should be able to "flip" the throttle open, and then it return back on it's own. If it sticks, lubricate/ adjust it so it's free. If that's not it, and if you are REALLY careful, take all the linkage and spring off the governor control rod. Hold the throttle shut by hand, start the engine. Then hold the GOVERNOR ROD with your free hand to the full throttle position. Open the throttle plate JUST A LITTLE. DO NOT OVER REV, and see if you feel the flyweight pushes against you on the control rod. If not, take the motor back out, pull the pan and see what's going on. Just don't let it "get away" from you.

I tried your suggestions. The linkage moves freely. When I unhooked the carb linkage and gov linkage and start it up, I could feel the gov arm start to push back as the rpm increased, and return to the forward position when the rpms decrease. Not sure if the pressure on the gov arm comes on as soon as it should. The rpms rise a fair about before I start to feel pressure.

The weights on the governor may be sticking. Lube the linkage and try again... Something internal may have gotten bent too... Or perhaps the plastic gear went bad

Well I started it up again tonight just to make sure things hadn't fixed themselves, and they didnt. So I pulled the engine and the pan. Everything looks fine . Gov center shaft moves freely, weights pull in and drop back on there own as I move the gov arm. The gov gear can be moved forward and backward about a 1/4", which I believe is fine. From what Im seeing I wouldnt hesitate to put it back together, other than I know it won't work. Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, I have re-read the manual..... And re-read your post. I need to know a few things before we proceed.
1.) Did you disassemble, clean or adjust the throttle plate-to-governor control rod? 2.) You say that the engine "races"..... Do you know how fast it runs? Does the governor ever try to slow it down? 3.) Did you disassemble, change, or adjust anything on the carburetor? I really think that you are overlooking something. Based on what you have told us, it sounds like you did everything correctly. Something is definitely amiss. I would say either there is a "binding" issue..... Or the governor shaft's internal arm is not close enough to the flyweights. Try doing the adjustment again, them before locking down the control arm rotate the control arm just a little toward the carb. Yes, that will limit the full throttle opening, but see if you can get it to work that way. |

1. I did not touch the throttle rod. It is the same length it was bere.
2. Not sure exactly how fast it goes or will go. I just know it is going to fast. If you give it any throttle at all it races up from idle. Never begins to stop. I always pull it back quickly to avoid damage. 3. The carb (walbro) was rebuilt. Bowl, float, needles remove. Throttle shaft/butterfly left alone. All of my linkage is good and clean. Gov looks good. Gov control arm (riveted internal rod) is tight and straight on the cross shaft.Gov was never even removed from the block. I am going proceed with reassembly and see if I can adjust it out. As a side note, I have been through these engines before. As far as I know I am going about this just as I always do, and have never had an issue. I do agree that something is not right.

Well after reassembly, no change. Throttle rod is already adjusted out all the way. Locating cross shaft backward in the clockwise direction opposed to fully ccw had no affecf. Next step will be engine disassambly and a new gov assembly.

I know you said "rebuilt," but could it be the carb?? Never heard good things about the walbro. Had to replace mine with a carter. Just an idea. Have another carb you can throw on. Good luck.

I adjusted the high idle screw down to were the engine would not open up at all. Another turn and off it goes. Throttle shaft does not have a lot of slop. The carb worked fine before. All I did was put a new bowl gasket on and clean it up a bit. The carb did cross my mind but Im pretty sure it is fine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
