Default K161 Stop Pin

I'm working on my K161 in my 1961 original and no matter what I did I couldn't get the governor to set properly. I started looking at the engine for possible causes and noticed that the PO had apparently stuck a bolt in the block where the stop pin goes. My question is can I install the proper stop pin in without tearing the engine down and could this be the cause of my engine wanting to run wide open? As always thanks for any help.

on a 161 the stop is behind the governor arm, you loosen the brass nut and rotate the stop to adjust the speed. check the manual if you're not sure. you can down load it at kohler engine site

that keeps the governor gear from falling off of the pin inside the engine.

oh ok....well that doesn't sound good....can I install it without tearing the engine apart? That would probably explain why the governor isn't working?

if the governor fell of the pin inside you will have to at least take the pan off, I've changed them on 10 and 12 hp Kohlers with the engine assembled and its time consuming but never tried on the smaller ones.

yep, that's the one that holds the governor from falling off of the pin that it rides on

if the governor assembly did fall off it possibly did other damage. it drives off of the cam.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
