Default Drive shaft in 1882 is not engaging motor

Hello,
Need a little help from the forum. I was mowing with my 1872 and out of the blue, it quit pulling and the hydraulics quit working. No leakage, so I thought to check the drive shaft going from the engine to the transaxle. Turns out it is not engaging the engine so of course its not turning the pump so I have no hydraulic pressure. I can push the drive shaft forward slightly toward the engine and it will engage. Has something failed in the coupling? There is no noticeable damage to where the drive shaft enters the rubber dust boot. Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Can you post a pic of what you have for a drive shaft? Something sounds odd on this one. I'm thinking some one replaced the drive shaft at some point with a CV style from a later tractor and maybe put the wrong length shaft in it.

If everything is still original , sounds like it sheared a spiral pin .

Only drive shaft in a Cub that I know of that has a "Dust Boot" is the Cyclops style CV shaft.

Check the rear for broken or missing bolts. It may have shifted back causing the shaft to come out.

Your right his other post's are about an 1882 so assuming that it is an 1882 and from what he is saying my guess is that the splines on the shaft are toast. Probably has never been greased and it's just worn out.

Default My bad, I did mean 1882 not 1782

Sorry guys for typing in the wrong model. I took the side cover off under the battery to access where the shaft is connected to the CV style connector. The connector is solidly mounted to the engine, but the shaft just turns in the joint. Does this mean the shaft has failed? IF so, where can I find one? Thanks so much for your help!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
