Default Cub cadet 72

I just picked this up yesterday....woohoo another toy to tinker with. CUB CADET 72 from feb. 1969. It has a 38in. deck, sleeve hitch, and a 3 point hitch. I will be starting the restore process soon.
It was shedded in a corner for the last 10yrs and previously seems to have seen little use as the bar for the undercarriage pivot point doesn't even have any wear to speak of.
It runs and drives and cuts grass, but the carb. needs some definite attention.
The lil 72 was in the corner and the shed had a fire so u will see some crackling from the heat on paint, but seems everything else is intact and operational.
Will someone please let me know what the additional holes on the top by gear shift are from. Kinda looks like it used to have a creeper gear maybe... but what about the 3 holes directly below the shifter????
I also picked up a non running 125 today with a sleeve hitch. Only other item it has is the original owners manual.

have a good day and as always comments are welcome and appreciated.

U R CORRECT ZIPPY, but mine seems to have been under a drill for 4 additional holes. 3 directly under the shifter knob and 1 other under the breather for the creeper. any other thoughts perhaps. thanks in advance

Possibly top access to to remove the coupler pin with a punch from the top... several attempts to get it aligned right...

My 73 had a hole torched there for that reason.

Nice finds!

EXCELLENT.... and darn it all at the same time. I've just got to figure out which I am going to restore now. I can't have 1 of the ole girls just sitting around waiting endlessly. I had thought of using a spare 12 I have for a repower on the 72, but not real certain I wanna take it away from orig. status.
Anyways, thanks for the comments and the information and I'm certain u will see one of them here on the auction block soon......
If anyone wants either the 125 or the 72 for themselves send me a PM and chat me up and I'm certain it'll sway my thoughts and solidify my actions about which to restore. I just couldn't pass them both up when I saw them.
Have a great day......

On the back of the 125, though it has no head or tail lights, it seems to have a clear lens bulb directly in the center above the sleeve hitch. any thoughts???
I am learning a lot about these as I go along and love all the input from you guys here.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
