I have a IH built 782 that has blown engine and a wiring harness that needed replacing. I purchased a CCC made 782 that had a good Kohler Mag 18 engine and a good wiring harness. I removed the blown engine and wiring harness from the IH built 782 and replaced with the Mag 18 engine and wiring harness from the CCC 782. I also removed the relay and moved it to the IH 782. The ignition switch does not work when you go to engine start position. (Is the switch different on IH 782 compared to the CCC 782). I installed a push button start button with cables running to the post on the starter solenoid. This works to start the 782. Everything else seems to works and amp gage shows it is charging but for some reason the battery (which is new) does not seem to be charging as it should. After a few times using the tractor mower I notice the 782 is harder to start and finally I have to but battery charger to bring battery back to full charge. When battery is fully charged it spins the engine really well, but after repeated use the battery gets weaker and weaker. Don't know if I might have a defective battery or I missed something when I made the switch. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks. Larry

I think the wiring harness is 725-3082. At least the wiring harness had the relay like the one shown on this diagram.

The only relay on a 782 was the "Reverse Relay".

Ok...here are the problems:
(A) The 782 never came from the factory with a Kohler M-18 in it. (B) There are no factory diagrams for a 782 w/M-18 in it. (C) There are two different wiring diagrams for the 782 ( with a KT-17) depending upon serial number range. For what I have read, I have NO clue what you got. A M-18 can be installed into 782 with a couple of modifications, but since we don't know what you have, it is difficult to answer your question.

Well, I purchased a yellow and white 782 Hydro off craigslist with the plan to move the engine and wiring harness to the IH built 782. The model # for the yellow/white is 148660100 and Ser # 776853. The yellow and white engine and tractor itself ran good so that was the reason I wanted to do the switch. I knew the Mag 18 was not standard for the 782. I also needed the wiring harness that was in the 782 Hydro. The relay I was referring to, on 782 Hydro, was mounted on the left side of pedestal assembly with a plug that had 5 wires. Trying to duplicate what was in the 782 Hydro when I made the switch I moved the wiring harness with any connection that was not on the IH 782. The only thing not on the IH 782 was this relay with the 5 wire plug. The reverse relay I know about is under the dash panel with a flexible arm that detects when tractor is in reverse. Is that correct? I also, have a yellow and white 682 that seems to have the same wiring harness and the relay mounted the same way as the 782 Hydro. Sorry for being long winded with my descriptions.

Measure how many volts you have at the battery with the engine running to see if the battery is getting charged.
If your IH built 782 still has the KT17 in it , then it will have a different ignition switch in it than the tractor with the 18HP Mag. The KT17 has points where the Mag does not. That is unless a PO has messed with the switches/wiring. The part with the flexible arm is a safety switch to shut the blades off when you put the tractor in reverse. I had an 1811 that would not start and the reverse switch was bad.Lots of things could be wrong to not make it start. A bad reverse switch/seat safety switch/pedal safety swich,bad ignition switch,etc... I guess the CCC 782 started and ran good before you swapped engines ??? If it did , Maybe something is hooked up wrong or something pulled apart. I had to rewire my 1872 and i used a butt connector on one wire and didn't crimp it good and the wire pulled out of one side of the connector and wouldn't start. It didn't pull all the way out , just enough where it was still in the connector but no contact. Did you use the ignition switch from CCC tractor in the IH 782 ??? |

The relay you are talking about on the left part of the dash tower is for the PTO. It has nothing to do with the motor. The only reason for the relay is the reverse safety switch.... the seat switch may be tied to it too, I don't remember.
