Your 12hp Kohler is almost a "square bore" motor, and has a very heavy flywheel. It makes as much or more torque than most engines with half again as much HP. Keep it!

This is the info from the Cub site for the 1000 series
Series 1000

Lawn & Garden Tractors
•Mowing decks from 42 to 54-inches wide.
•Powerful engines, from 18 to 27 horsepower.
•Unsurpassed 3-year/120-hour and 5-year/500-hour limited warranty

MSRP Starting at $1,649.00

If the new "27HP" can only pull a 54" deck why could the old "17HP KT17" pull a 60" deck in a Super that weighed more? It's all marketing BS.

If you want to take it even further the O came with 7HP and a 36" deck so 14HP for a 72" deck? Why do we now need 27+HP OH yeah HP sells and the bigger the HP number the more we can charge. I could go on but I would be banned for life LMAO

i was wondeing this too. my push mower has a 6.75 HP engine and my original has a 7. amazing what some torque and gearing can do. i went to the kohler site and the 27 hp command pro, heres the specs

Model Command PRO CH740
Max Power @3600 RPM hp (kW) 1 27 (20.1)
Displacement cu in (cc) 44.0 (725)
Bore in (mm) 3.3 (83)
Stroke in (mm) 2.6 (67)
Max Torque lbs. ft (Nm)1 42.3 (57.3)
Compression Ratio 9.0:1
Dry Weight lbs (kg) 94 (43)
Oil Capacity U.S. quarts (L) 2 (1.9)
Lubrication Full pressure w/full-flow filter
Dimensions L x W x H in 14 x 17.7 x 26.5
Backpressure Limit 2 50
J1995 Power hp (kW) 3 24.4 (18.2)
J1995 Torque lbs ft (Nm) 3 37 (50.1)

just from my thinking i always want more power. when looking for a cub i wanted the biggest i could find so i got a 1650. ive always wondered if i got a different model would i be satisfied with a smaller engine. my O does not run yet so i have no comparison. when the people in the neighborhood ask what size engine is in my cub they seem astonished it only has 16 hp.

Wanna see some of what a 1450 can do?
Check out this thread

Heck, my 1000 can do almost as good under these conditions albeit at a little slower pace. These 50" ddecks give a better cut than my son's Cub 48" zero turn.

That is an exaggeration Sam, I gotta call you on it. The 7HP would only pull the deck in low gear if any reasonable amount of grass is present to cut.

If you are mowing in 2nd, you ain't pullin' this grade, or cuttin' this thick of grass;

14HP of ANY bore/stroke and flywheel ain't gonna pull this 72" deck. even in first gear.

Onan is known as a high torque engine, and 24HP is barely enough at the speed I cut at.

The high HP machines will allow much faster ground speeds. I do not think it is all marketing hype.

Some, yes, but, not all!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
