I just rebuilt my deck and this is the second time mowing with it. I am very happy with the results! I had a spindle that was bad so I bought a set off of a forum member here and then I reassembled the deck. I was on a budget so I reused the bearings ( which were still very tight ) and seals. I did order new fiber discs because mine were virtually non existent. My dad always told me stories, when I was a kid, of him out mowing the neighbor's brand new green tractor ( early 80's) with a narrow frame cub. I have to say, the lines aren't perfect by any means, but for a 45 year old tractor with original steering parts it does a great job. PLUS the neighbors can't believe I am mowing with a tractor from 1968.

How does the 72 handle that 38 inch deck? I always wondered how the 7/8hp tractors do with mowing. My 108 seems to be a good match to the 42 inch deck, but in heavy grass, it's working hard.

The 72 handles it well. When I first engage the PTO it lags the engine a bit but picks back up quickly. I have not mowed really deep or wet grass with it yet, but i probably never will. I used to have a 42" deck for my 104 with a built motor and it took a lot to lag it down.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
