Default 1650 smoking when started

Howdy all,
I have a 1975 1450 with a k341 engine in it. The engine is about 12 years old and it was a new engine not a rebuilt. The problem That I am having is that when I start it up it pushes out a lot of smoke and only fires half the time when first started but as the tractor gets warmer the smoke goes away and it starts running like it should. It seems like it is running like this longer and longer every time it is started. Last year I replaced the coil, plug, point, and the spark plug. It is throwing me they a loop. any ideas.

I have a few ideas, but what color is the smoke?
Black, blue, white, grey?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong:

Black - Running rich (too much gas)
White - Running lean
Gray - Typically rings are bad or the cylinder bore is worn out. Could also be sucking oil in through the air filter though.
Blue - Typically when the valve seals are bad.

I don't have a lot of experience with these kohler engines, but these are just general smoke color guidelines.

**Edit: I don't think these motors have valve seals (like car engines), so maybe the valve stem or valve guide is worn out. Hopefully someone else can chime in with some experience**

From what I know, it's okay to still run the engines like this short term. It's just really bothersome sometimes. Usually it just means that the engine is getting worn out. You can try some thicker oil, but that may cause other problems (like harder cold starting and more engine wear).

Take a glance through the kohler engine manual:

Gray and blue are hard to distinguish.... They both look the same. But it means that the motor is burning oil. Your description of gray and blue is a little off..... Just means burning oil.

Howdy all. Thank you for the advice. For some reason it stopped doing it on its own. I'm thinking it was a sticky valve . So if it ain't broken don't fix it. Haha. I think if it does it again I'll take the head off and do some modification.

My 1650 was doing this as well, and it would come and go... In my case it was a tell tale sign of a poor rebuild job... A couple of months later the crank broke! I checked the valve lash, cleaned the crank case breather, etc, etc... All wasted time... Shoulda pulled it for inspection from day 1...

Just tossing that out there for some food for thought. If nothing is really wrong, gasket kits are really affordable. When I sat back and thought about it, I'd never drive my car if it was doing that and I could have built a potent V8 for what I have my Kohler...

A 129 that I just purchased did the exact same thing. I replaced the air cleaner and pre-cleaner with new ones, and of course use oil on the pre-cleaner. I changed the oil and ran pure synthetic and the spark plug. Then I ran Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank after installing a new fuel filter and new petcock. The engine runs smooth with absolutely no smoke.

PS> I always use Marvel Mystery Oil in my fuel mix to help clean and lubricate the upper engine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
