Default Can someone edjamacate me on tillers?

I just picked up a 1450 that came with a tiller, fully complete with extensions. I have seen online people saying that have a #1 or #2 tiller, but I'm not sure what the difference is so my question is this; what's the difference between a #1 and a #2 tiller? Is one preferred over the other?

Off the top of my head: a #1 is by itself narrower than a #2. A #1 you can get extensions for to make it wider, whereas a #2 you cannot. Check out http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4698 I've seen both a #1 and a #2 and I would prefer a #2. I use my dad's behind my 147 and it can handle it just fine (he's used it behind his 125 and it worked good as well). I like the look of the #2 with no extensions better than a #1 with extensions.

Awesome, thanks for the quick response!

It seems as though I have a #1 tiller w/both extensions. I wasn't sure if there was a difference in gear boxes because I thought I had read somewhere there was but I guess not. Thanks again!

You have a #1, missing the pulley guard, which is common. That belt tends to be the biggest PITA to put back on once it falls off so I imagine a host of people took them off to facilitate putting them back on easier. Does your tiller have a ID plate? It should tell you if you have a #1 or #1A (not sure the difference.)

Glad you have the belts (did I read that right from another post?) The drive belt from the PTO to the gear box is big $$$$$$$$$$$$ take good care of that one.

I'd love to have the belt cover, do you know if they are hard to get a hold of? And I haven't looked very close for an ID plate but I will try to tonite. As for the belt, mine went on very easy and hasn't slipped or come off yet, so I'll keep my fingers crossed

And yes, the main drive belt is in good shape so I plan on babying that thing because I don't want to spend $70+ on a belt

The only difference in the gearboxes is when using behind the 82 series tractors they had the 5/8 bottom pulley on the gearbox.

Daniel my belt was $85 from the dealer, not cheap, but speed cost money, and how fast do you want to go?
About the preference between a #1 or #2, for me the #1 would be the better because your able to narrow the tiller for between rows if need be, or put on both extensions for a wider tilling width. IMO

I do the same thing Todd. I use both extensions when rototilling the whole plot and remove to make the rows not as wide to cram more stuff in!
I have both so_oo!

there is one other difference between the #1-1A and the #2 , and that is a chain tensioner on the chain case. I cant remember which one had it, I think the #2.

The #2 has the chain tensioner BUT the manual says no touchy!
