Question cub cadet 2166 wont start

2166 cub cadet with 16 hp kohler horizontal shaft will not start. getting gas & has spark. i checked all fuses and wires all look good, also changed key switch. the only way it will start is if i hold the key in starting position amd remove solenoid wire as it starts to disengage the starter. if i try to release parking brake or turn pto on it dies... any ideas???

I don't have the wiring diagram for a 2166 but it sounds like a safety switch or connection problem to me. Take a good look at the seat switch first.

thanks for all the info. its not exactly the same, the wire colors are different but im thinking it might be one of the relays or a diode. but really not sure cause it will run as long as i hold the key in starting position.

You mention that you changed the key switch, did you get the proper one from a Cub dealer? Most of the stuff you pick up at TSC etc won't work on a Cub.

Sounds like test light time, a copy of the Kohler manual, a cold beer and a cigar.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
