im going through a newly acquired 1450 for my friend and i got it running but noticed smoke from under the engine tin after i shut it down. so i removed the engine and all the tin. not oil leaks anywhere except a little from the breather but i think thats kinda normal? cleaned the grass clipping off the flywheel and head and thought problem solved.
put it all back together does the exact same thing. i did notice its charging 17 volts so i unplugged the regulator thinking maybe the stator would get hot from overcharging. ran for a few more minutes hoping the airflow would cool it down. didnt help still smoking in my garage right now! its been like 20 minutes and no change. Comes out behind the carb and mostly the hole in the flywheel cover where the air cleaner hose hooks into. the smoke smells like hot engine. not electrical or oil smell. i have no idea what it could be any ideas??

That is a odd problem, maybe someone will chime in that has seen that before.

Out of time?
![]() ![]() Incorrect timing might make it run hot. |

Hmm....interesting problem, especially if you cleaned it out already and don't see anything. I'd run some Marvel Mystery Oil through the fuel system and see if that helps at all. That is just a quick guess, maybe to free up something that might be obstructed....

Points haven't been messed with but I should check the timing. Doesn't seen to run unusually hot. I'm hoping it could have been residue from the brake parts cleaner but I have my doubts

i think the brake cleaner residue was the culprit. it was smoking the first time i ran it due to the grass clippings inside the tin. i didnt have time to tear it down and didnt want my house to burn down so i sprayed a whole can of non flammable brake parts cleaner on it to put out the "fire". it must have taken a few runs to burn off the residue but now it doesnt smoke any more.
thanks for your help guys!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
