Default 1450 Governor

Hey all.
I picked up up a 1450 last year in pretty good shape but in need of some TLC.
I haven't really done anything other than a little tuneup and run it.

Anyway, my I was cutting with it the other day when it started revving up too high. The only way I was able to maintain a reasonable RPM was to use 1/4 throttle.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Sounds like the gov needs to be reset, or it's broken.

well, nothing seems loose, and I have not made any adjustments, so
I am going to assume something is broken at this point.
A governor is one of the things I have never gone into, guess that will change pretty soon.

I've got the same problem on my 1450. I honestly haven't had time to deal with it and have controlled the RPMs with the throttle over the last several uses. You will find a serious loss of power when going up hills or using the PTO with this method and obviously the governor needs to be repaired and I suspect the flyweights are shot. Unfortunately the manual only explains how to adjust it but not how to repair it (I assume it involves removing the head, but I'm not a real mechanic!).

Unfortunately, the governor is one of the first parts put into the engine during assembly.

yeah, I hadn't investigated it much further but figured that would be the case. Oh well, it is burning a little oil so I might as well go through it while I am at it, and replace the iso biscuits, and weld the cradle while it is out.

Is there any potential for the governor to catastrophically self destruct if I run it carefully?

There is a chance to come apart or have a broken part get in a place where it shouldn't be.

If the governor suddenly stopped working, it's very likely there's already pieces floating around in there, so I would not run it anymore until you fix it.

the paddle broke off of the governor shaft
never would have thought that would happen, but shows anything is possible.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
