What makes these tractors different from other cubs? They're the 782/982's, correct? Larger engines?

I'm no expert, but while I was looking them up, The 982 is the Super GT .It's longer. They are the first ones that offer the diesel engine (kabuta). The gas engines are the kohler twins...17hp for the 782, and onan twin for the 982.. They both come with hydro lift, and elec. pto.
They are big, powerful, serious machines. I was thinking of finding one to put a front loader, and backhoe on. And the weird part is the dual rear brake pedals.....for left, and rt wheel. I think they are both hydro only.

Stitch: Basically, they are just later model brothers to all the earlier Yellow/White ones. When IH hired a new President/CEO, Archie McCardell, in 1977, he at some point decreed that all IH made tractors would be Red! So, with the QL era ending and the 82 Series in research and development, they became IH 2150 RED Lawn & Garden Tractors with production beginning in late 1979 for the 1980 Model year.
Another slight difference from previous practice, the Cadet Lawn Tractors were incorporated in the 82 Series model numbering. Also, note that the RER Lawn Mowers and Walk-Behind Mowers remained White in color (they weren't tractors...). Yes, the 682/782 introduced the twin cylinder Kohler KT engines of 17 horsepower. One more hp that the previous 16 hp single cylinder 1650 but ooooh so much smoother. The Iso-Bar engine mounting was also gone. Also, with the 82 Series Model 982, Cub Cadet introduced the first "Super Garden Tractor" to the world. It used larger wheels & tires, was about 8-10 inches longer, and had a 19.9 hp opposed twin Onan engine. IH never called the 982 a "Super Garden". That was only applied later by the CCC Corporation after IH sold the Outdoor Products Division to MTD. Later, in 1982, CCC switched the differential housings to Cast Aluminum. They then introduced the IH 1282/CCC 680 (basically a red 1250 including a modified Iso-Bar engine mount). In 1984 CCC introduced the IH 782D/CCC 882 with the 3-cyl 15 hp Kubota Diesel. I was going to respond, but decided to wait until more knowledgeable members chime in. The only thing I would add is the 582 with it's 16 hp Briggs engine (I won't mention the 482 or the 582 Special).

They actually made a 182, 282, 382, 482, 582, 582 special, 682, 782, 782 Diesel, 982, 1282.
I may have forgot a few. But if I remember rite this is how they were. 1,2,3,482 were verticle shaft small cheapies, body style just like the red, white, blue spirit of 76 (i think it was) the,582,582 special are the standard 82 series body style. they were all horizontal motors, but they had some funky tranny in them. I am thinking it was some kind of belt drive 4 speed. 682 should be an 82 with manual lift and hydro drive 782 ,782d should be an 82 with hydro lift and drive the d having the diesel motor 982 this is the 82 super, basicly the same but the frame is 5-6 inches longer and has bigger tires, dual hydro control and dual brakes, and an onan motor. 1282 an 82 with a 12 hp kohler and hydro lift and drive most of these all had either the kt 17, briggs 16 opposed twin, onan 20 in the super,or the kabota diesel. I have always been told that they were built before MTD happened and they were badged and sold at international dealers not cub cadet dealers. I do not know if any of this is correct or not, I am sure some is and some is not but it is just what I can rember of the top of my head.

So the red wasn't just in response to the expensive green paint on the competition?
If they has always been red I wonder if IH would still be making cubs? I saw a 582 in red, no motor, and almost bought it even tho I have no $$.. Given the choice, theoretically, would you have bought a red Cadet over a yellow one, all other things equal? I know I woulda.

FYI:
The 580, 680, 1604, 1606, 1710, 1711, 1712, 882, 1912, 1914, 1210, 1512 are NOT red Cub Cadets!! There is no such thing as a 986 either. 986 is found only on the ID plate and is a factory code for a 982 with a rear PTO. Please re-read my earlier post. I covered all the red ones!! Myron B |

Truckntran, IH was having financial troubles while the cub cadets were being made red so no that didn't keep them from selling the line. They sold the line while they were being made red. MTD actually kept making them red for the ag dealers and yellow/white for the cub dealers. There's a couple books out there that have excellent info on the history of the cub cadet including serial number info etc... Read Myrons first post it has some excellent info. Some say for example a red 982 would sell for more than a yellow/white 982 with same exact options but it's people's preference and the person buying/selling it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
