Default Parting Out Model 147 ??????

My earlier post on buying a Cub Cadet 147 that my wife's niece has for sale. She wants $300.00, but, I think I will offer her $225.00 and bring it home and start removing parts. After searching the Internet on parts, I find they are expensive. So, it would pay me to buy this 147 and remove all working parts and sell them on ebay instead of restoring it.

First of all, I don't like parting them out, if you are not going to use the 147 your self, sell it as a whole tractor. Don't tear it down, just keep it whole, do not mess up a complete Cub Cadet. unless it is not in good shape that it can't be used.

From my view point, it appears to be in good condition. But, the owner tells me the electric lift stop working and the starter won't work at times. Also, the rear tires are much smaller than the original factory ones. The rear tires appear to be about 18" size. The owner told me they bought this 147 about 1986 and the rear tires where on it at that time.

I had the idea on restoring it, but, from what I can read here, the parts are not available.

Parts are readily available. All of our sponsors would have what you would need. Plus, some of the guys on this forum have some parts.

All of that sounds pretty easy to fix especially if you asked around here on the forum. Would be a shame to part out something that only needs new tires and a new lift/starter--or just a repair of either.

I'm going to say that you could fix that tractor for around $125 (my thinking states that you switch from electric lift to a manual lift. The whole manual lift arm is not very expensive. Add around 40-50 for a good used generator, maybe 30 for some good used rear tires and rims, etc). Add that to your initial price and you still have a very reasonably priced high hp Cub Cadet which is very popular.

On the other hand, YES. You have the potential to double your money by parting it out. There is nothing wrong with doing that IMO. You would be helping out many people with the parts you supply. Plus it's your tractor, so do as you please.

All of our tractors are worth more in parts than they are as a whole.

I would rather have a 147 that will be around forever than have a couple of extra bucks that will be gone in no time.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
