This is my first time rebuilding a PTO clutch (for model 149). I followed the instructions in the service manual and I used the guage that came with the rebuild kit.
DSC_1160.jpg When I took the old PTO apart, it only had one spring plate. However, the kit came with two. So I put two. Is this okay? DSC_1165a.jpg I used the guage as instructed in the service manual. DSC_1167a.jpg Here's a shot of one of the inside springs. Does everything look okay with my reassembly?

Hi guys.
I am about to order the parts for the rebuild of my 149 PTO. It sounds like I have the same as what SharkyOhio found - one spring instead of two flat springs. I find it interesting we both may have what appears to be a non-stock setup on our 149 PTOs. I looked around and read somewhere that folks use the PTO rebuild kit (759-3490) which has one spring with the bent tips instead of the kit for the 149 (759-3489) because the double springs tend to slip (even with the spring retaining knobs that are on the 149 clutch pulley). Does this sound familiar? Is it a common practice to rebuild the 149 PTO with the single bent tip spring instead of the two flat springs? Is it nonsense? SharkyOhio - how did your PTO turn out? Thanks Vince N. |

Yup, I think it's good too. Two nuts on the backside, all threads showing approx same amount-- should work good.

I installed the PTO pictured above on my tractor, but I have not used it with a mowing deck or snow thrower yet. It seems to be working correctly with the release lever, but I always engage the clutch when I test drive the tractor with no deck or other implement attached.
I have not heard of the center spring plates slipping and the repair manual shows the two spring plate setup as the correct configuration for this type of PTO.

I installed the correct PTO rebuild kit for the 149 (the one with two flat springs) and it works great!
Now I will turn my attention to getting my 44" mower deck working better ... and be on the look out for wheel weights and snow blade. I love this CC...I even waxed it ![]() |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
