My points are fryed in my Cub Cadet 102???
I just bought this cub cadet 102 with snow blower. It's old but seemed to run good but needed a battery. I parked it in the garage and now it won't start. It seemed like it wasn't getting spark so I bought a coil and still nothing. I followed the wire from the negative side of the coil to a set of points that looks like it uses a rod of the crank to open and close them. The points are fried. I have ordered a new set of points but wish I knew what happened so it doesn't happen again.
Thanks for any help Brewman I heard leaving the key on may have fried the points. Anyone know If that's true?

Leaving the key on with the tractor not running can burn up points, mis adjusted points will fry quickly too, and if the incorrect coil is used there will be too much current going thru the points as well.
I'm betting they were getting old anyway, and were almost due for replacement. Once considered a minor tune up replacement item, points are now getting expensive and it hurts to have to keep buying them. Google "pointsaver for Cub Cadet" and you might find something helpful if you dislike changing your points.

In addition to the previous post, a bad condenser will shorten the life of a set of points fast.

Napa auto parts was able to cross reference the coil using the original part #KH-231281-S and he said it had an internal resister. I have just ordered a new condenser along with my new points from a place called partstree.com. So I'm hoping all my base's are covered. Thanks for all the help guys what a great site this is...
