Smile New to Cub Cadets!

Hi all,
I am just starting my CC adventure.

My father in law was clearing out his space and asked me to haul a IH CC 149 away. I jumped on the Internet to figure out how I might get it running again and found this very useful forum.

It appears I have had some good fortune!

After a bit of work and some great info from the OCC forum I was able to get the 149 started and ran it around the yard a little. Both the hydro and engine seem to be strong.

Next up is the manual PTO with brake...it feels like it is locked in the engaged mode. I was able to get it to move a little but I suspect it needs more movement to disengage. In the end I will probably need to install rebuilt unit once I get the rascal off. (Note in the pic below the inner PTO brake disc is removed)

Thanks for help!

Welcome! Yes, those front PTOs can be a pain to get off, just use a lot of PB blaster and let it soak for a couple days. The 6 set screws will eventually come free. Also, I use heat... I have a blow torch and blast the begeezes out of the PTO to get the set screws off. I would think most of the PTO is fine, just don't force it off. It probably will need some new springs which you can get at any hardware store as well as a polishing.

Nice find on the 149!

Thanks ihcc104. I just came in from outside having pulled the PTO off. I let some PB soak in for a couple hours while I pondered what to do about the anti-rattle springs that were in the way. Just one little "pop" from each of the screws when I applied pressure and they came out as if they were new. Once the screws were out the unit slipped right off! Unfortunately, I broke one of the anti-rattle springs in the process but suspect I got off light given other stories I have read about getting the PTO loose.

Yes, you did luck out. I had a heck of a time with one of mine. Glad you got yours off. Truthfully, I have 3 of these PTOs and none of them have the anti-rattle springs. I was more talking about the springs on the inside to keep the pressure off of the "clutch" when it is disengaged. Good luck with your Cub, your off to a great start!

Good to know about the anti-rattle springs. Yes, I see the springs you are talking about now (they look pretty good but don't have any pressure on them at the moment...) It appears the clutch disc may have seized itself to the pulley and/or the clutch plate. Not surprising given it has been sitting out in the weather for a while.

Thanks again

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
