I had the K321 out of my 149 to remove balance gears and troubleshoot the non functioning ACR. While I was there, I removed and cleaned the head, adjusted the valves, and cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor. Now that it is back together, it is not running right. It starts and idles, but hesitates or even flat out stalls when I open the throttle. The carb is at the settings in the manual. I reset the governor arm as described in the manual. The valve clearance is to spec. I used a new head gasket and torqued it to spec as well. Any suggestions on where I should start my troubleshooting?

I'll look into that stuff. Thanks. Of course it was running fine before I took it apart. I just wanted to clean it up a little. I know, it it ain't broke...

Did you make sure you are getting a good fuel stream to the carburetor? Might be something in your tank that broke loose while tearing it apart...

It runs now!
I went back into the carburetor and I'm a little embarrassed to say that I had the needle upside down! Once back together, it still wouldn't run right and that turned out to be something that clogged the inline filter that I out in the fuel line. Filter replaced, carb re installed and it runs better than ever. Thanks for your help.

starts and idles...recheck the carb float level and main jet (the idle screw/jet operates on its own as far as I know...doesn't come into play when load is applied). might want to inspect the plug also to check for heavy carbon build.
I'm obviously an amatuer here but until the pros arrive, I would do a continuity check on the wire coming from the points and also on the plug wire. |

Teejk. Look up a couple posts. It was a carb issue. Mistake during reassembly.

I saw your post after I hit the "post" button (it wasn't there when I started typing! I type pretty slow and am easily distracted). But have to ask...when you say "upside down"??? anyway glad you got it figured out...for me there is always a sense of pride in keeping the old iron running (my 1250 is one of the first and even though my wife hates it, no tin replacement for me as long as I can buy parts).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
