Default How to turn a 3 bladed mowing deck into a single in seconds

I swear today is the 13th. Today I turned my 3 bladed 48" mowing deck into a single bladed deck. Was mowing the front yard and didn't even get maybe 5 minutes of seat time before I heard the deck slowing and saw a bunch of rubber flying out of the pulley shields. A few seconds later 2 of the blades ceased movement.

Now I gotta find me a new belt. I checked the pulleys- no burrs or imperfections of any significant kind so I'm hoping it's just an old belt. On top of that I found out that my truck is going to require approx. 400 dollars and change (at least!) to fix a bad fan clutch and water pump, so I can't even drive to my local CC dealer and get one.

Probably shouldn't have walked under the ladder at work this morning after I saw the black cat in my front yard.

I think someone added that idler pulley to the left of the center pulley. I've never seen that on that style deck.

Yeah it's def. added. When it's running it's noisy as heck- makes a loud whirring noise- but my trusted IH mechanic said that it shouldn't hurt the performance of the machine. I think my belt was just old because it's pulling apart really easily when I pick at it.

I think the extra pulley will hurt the belt life!!

I would bet it was added to allow the PO to use too long of a belt they happened to have.

Without that extra pulley, the belt gets to go in a straighter path.

The extra pulley causes the belt to reverse direction while carrying the tensile load of two blades cutting.

Great eye for catching that, SAM MAC!!

+1...tensioner on loaded side of belt = bad. Belt tensioners need to be on the slack side of the belt as the original one is.

Update:

I went to a CC dealer and got a replacement belt today, then commenced work on removing the unnecessary noisy idler pulley. (That thing made mowing annoying as it whirred quite loudly.) Knock on wood so far it works great. I was able to finish the yard. Thank you for your replies.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
