Now that I have finally finished assembling the 1250 I picked up in pieces I am having electrical problems. I traced every wire and checked ohm resistance before I put the tractor together and I thought all of the wires were good and had good grounds. I purchased the engine separately and the owner said it ran fine and the stator/volt reg worked.
However, after 15 minutes of test mowing I cut the tractor off to check everything out. Since the engine doesn't like to idle I cut it off by reducing throttle until it cuts out. I forgot to turn off the ign switch. After 2 minutes of checking everything over I heard crackling and started seeing smoke. I pulled the neg term on the batt and it stopped. I checking the wires and the top wire coming out of the voltage reg was hot and the wire plug end was melted. What would cause this? The smoke was coming up from the flywheel area. Now if I reconnect the battery and turn the ign switch on the amp meter goes straight to discharge. Does this mean the voltage reg is bad or is the stator bad? Chris |

sounds like you have a dead short some where. You will need to check all your positive wires to ground. But as bad as it sounds you may just be able to see it.

What caused it? You left the key on. I think you've learned the hard way why you should just rebuild the carb instead of turning off the engine that way.
The smoke coming out of the flywheel area is probably the stator, and I'm guessing the rectifier is toast, too. There should be a diode the circuit somewhere so the battery can't ground out through the charging system, but either I've lost my mind and that's not true, or the diode failed. Either way, you're likely going to need a new stator, rectifier, and possibly some wiring between the rectifier and the ignition switch and battery. |

Thanks for the info. I will check everything next weekend. I am planning on adjusting the RPM, timing, carb with a possible carb rebuild if necassary. I was just trying out the tractor for a test run. I didn't know leaving the ign switch on for that short of time would fry anything. It never hurt my 126. The more I work on this WF hydro tractor the more I appreciate my old NF gear drive.
Luckely I have the stator, rectifier and voltage reg from the blown engine that came with the tractor that I can swap on the replacement engine. I guess I'll be pulling the engine back out. I'll post what I find next weekend. Chris |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
