Default Leaf mulcher

I have a 54" deck on a 1864 CC. The discharge chute plastic flap is gone.

I'm not satisfied with how this mower mulches leaves. Is there something I can do to make it mulch the leaves quicker and without so many passes?

The deck has standard blades on it. Think they were made by Oregon.

For 36 years I raked leafs here, then I got my cub with 50" deck,
I installed Gator blades and blocked the discharge chute, walla! no more leaf raking!!
1 pass does it, I raise the deck up a bit and go at it.
I find if I keep up with them and when they are dry, they disappear.
When finished I blow the tractor off with my air hose as the mulching is quite dirty.

I do, but I don't use my CC for that. My cub mowing deck throws leaves anywhere but mulching them down. I have a push mower I use for that while the cub sits ready for snow removal.

Well I thank you guys for the replies. While I was waiting an answer, I made a block off plate and tried it out. It seems to work fine, even with the blades I have on it. The Gators may be better. Don't know, I've never used them.

I've had every style CC mower deck made from the Original up through the mid 90's. Never had one that would mulch leaves, they'd just blow them into windrows. So, since I had so many leaves, I would up with an EZ VAC lawn vacuum (three of them as a matter of fact) .

The EZ vac's did a super job on the leaves. It'd leave the yard clean. But, I ran out of room and besides in the last year, I have bought a 1864 and 2084 tractor both of which had the 54" deck. This works so the EZ's are going to be up for sale. I need the room!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
