Can anyone out there in Cubby Land enlighten me on how I would know how to identify what 3 (or 4)digit tractor a steering column would belong to. I know that different model part breakdowns have different part numbers pertaining to the complete unit. Regardless of part number they all seem to have the same Ross gearbox with the difference being in the shaft/tube length. Looking at a unit, the only part numbers I can find are on the gearbox. Specifically I have three units. They all have identical gearbox's with identical number stampings. One is from a 122, one from a 149, and the other from I don't know what. If I measure the tube length from the gearbox to the top end, the 122's length is 19", the 149's length is 18", and the "I don't know ones" length is 16. Obviously a tractor's dash tower height would determine which column that tractor would take. I would like to know what the 16 incher would fit. But without a stamped part number how can I reference what tractor a part fits?? Any responses are appreciated and thanks in advance.

I ran in to this recently
I believe that a 104 series uses the short column because of the "dish of the steering wheel " no guarantee but I believe that is what it may be for |

Cub Cadet used all Ross Steering Columns. The only difference, was the shaft/tube length. I can tell you, if you go to each series, you can find the Part Numbers for each but it don't give you the length. IIRC, if you plug any of those part numbers, it will cross to a "universal replacement" steering column, apparently fitting all applications.
Seems, like a daunting task to pull the steering columns of each series, measure them and then write down those findings. AFAIK, the internal parts at the base of the column are all the same. IF you want a model specific column, then I would scour the salvage yards (to included our sponsors above) for the model series you are looking for, and obtain that specific column.

Since it is a "Ross", they could be used by other manufacturers.
Maybe it fits a Greene tractor!!?? ![]() |

FYI the original cam is backwards of the other ross columns and the cam follower is shorter then the rest due to the narrow dash tower and placement of the column.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
