I recently picked up the 982 that Bob (72-149) had for sale and began looking for some pieces to finish it out. I will post some pics on here of the assembly of the unit. As of now, I have all of the rockshafts and pedals in and am in the process of my second project - using an 1872 as a parts donor. The 1872 has dual hydraulics, wheels and tires, power steering and an 18 Mag. This is everything I need to get the 982 in running condition. The 18 Mag had been sitting outside and the PO said he had it running on ether. Me and a buddy got it started and it runs like a champ. Once we got the engine running, I began the parting process on the 1872. Parts tractor also had a solid 50" deck - WIN. I threw some pics in for everyone to see, otherwise I know I'd get heckled.

Well, I've got the 18 Mag into it, and am driving it around. Still have a couple leaks from my rear end swap - I didn't make the gasket around the input shaft very well, and it's coming back to bite me. However, it's pretty much put together, just needs some finishing touches. Ordered decals and a parts manual from BinderBooks.com and am waiting to get it painted. In the mean time, I have been working on a deck rebuild - new bearings and seals. Have to get that buttoned up so I can mow this week. Unfortunately, the 982 is taking a backseat to that and some landscaping (keeping the wifey happy.) I need to take some parts pictures tonight, so maybe I'll sneak one in on the super.

Well, I started this project with the intentions of assembling everything and making sure there were no leaks and fix any problems, then I would continue with the restoration. Step one is complete. Everything fits together very nicely and I got all of the leaks stopped up - even the rear end. I didn't think it was possible to get one of them to quit leaking, but was pretty proud of myself! I have some pictures of the tractor on the way down - tonight I took the side panels, hood, fenders, battery box, and dash tower off of the machine. Hopefully my buddy will stop by tomorrow night and help me lift out the 18 mag - doing it by yourself is a backbreaker. I do have a couple of questions regarding the paint scheme. What parts were painted black on the IH 982s? I know the axles were all red on the IH 82 series, but I am sure the steering column was black. What about the fuel tank frame, battery box, brake calipers, hydraulic levers, hydraulic valve backing plate, etc.? I would like it to be as original as possible (I know, the 18 Mag). Any help would be much appreciated. Now for some pictures.
Nate

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
